Plaques identité Marine Britannique & Commonwealth

On the front of rating’s identity discs was stamped name, branch, service number and religion. For officers it was name, rank (here Chief Officer Flight Engineer) and religion. On the reverse was blood group.

Sur le recto des disques d'identités était imprimé le nom, la spécialité, le matricule et la religion. Pour les officiers, il y avait le nom, le grade (ici chief officer, mécanicien navigant aeronavale) et la religion. Sur le verso il y avait le groupe sanguin.



As is often the case, there is quite a bit of variation in the naming on discs that survive. Some have the blood groups on the front and service number on the back. Some have the names stamped at the top of the disc, others have it around the edges. To give some examples of naming on Navy identity discs, on the front of the one above is recorded "GEO SOUTHWARD" (George Southward - usually discs only record initials for given names, not abbreviations), "B3" for blood type, "CE" for religion (Church of England), "OD" for his rank (Ordinary Seaman) and on the reverse is impressed "S6090" for his service number. On the disc below is recorded "R J REYNOLDS" (Ronald James Reynolds), "TEL" for rank (Telegraphist), "PA2957" for service number and "MOSS 2A" for blood type. There is nothing impressed on the reverse and his religion is absent.

Comme il était souvent le cas, il y a des variantes dans la gravure des plaques qui sont arrivées juqu'à nous. certaines ont le groupe sanguin sur le recto et le matricule au verso. Certaines ont le nom sur le haut du disque, d'autres autour des bords. Pour donner des exemples de gravures sur les disques d'identité, sur le recto de celui présenté ci dessus, est mentionné "GEO SOUTHWARD" (pour Georges Southward - habituellement les disques ne mentionnaient que les initiales des prénoms et non les abréviations). "B3" pour le type de groupe sanguin, "CE" pour la religion "Eglise Anglicane", "OD" pour son grade (Simple Marin) et sur le verso est inscrit "S6090" pour son martricule.
Sur le disque ci dessous est mentionné "RJ REYNOLDS" (Ronald James Reynolds), "TEL" pour la spécialité (Telegraphiste), "PA2957" pour son matricule et "MOSS 2A" pour le groupe sanguin. Il n'y a rien d'imprimé sur le verso et sa religion est absente.

A noter : les marins ne portaient pas souvent leurs plaques en temps de paix et au début du conflit (usage de les porter à la musette du masque à gaz, de peur de s'étrangler en s'accrochant avec celles ci, lors des différentes taches quotidiennes près des machines) mais les pertes devenant de plus en plus grandes dans le temps,  il fut imposé aux hommes de les porter au cou, pour les identifier, en 1942.

In peace time the disc was wired to the gas respirator containers but with the declaration of war, they were ordered to be worn around the neck on a length of cord. This however, was often not the case and you rarely see RN personnel in photographs wearing their identity discs. Some of this may be cultural, but there are also practical reasons not to wear an identity disc around your neck when working, particularly with machinery where the cord could get hooked or be in the way. Men not wearing their discs continued to be an issue through the war. In 1942 CNO 330 referred personnel to AFO 2656/1940 directing them to wear their identity discs. Commanding Officers were ordered to “take the necessary steps to endure strict compliance by personnel in future”.
